Comments about the
Mime & Physical Expression
workshop
‘Super valuable course to learn mime skills, especially finding its link to emotion. Great approach - breaking down the detailed physicality and imagination involved besides the discipline itself.’ – Clovis PJ, Actor
‘It was eye-opening on the essence of mime; its complexity and its accessibility. It was great to experiment and discover the detail that makes the difference.’ - B. Rogers, Course Participant
‘This course extended my range of movement and bodily expression. And it was enormously fun, too!’ – Priti Colbeck, Actor
‘A wonderful workout for the mind and body.’ - Zoe Hinks, Puppeteer and Theatre Maker
‘Just awesome.’ – Prof. Tony Sedgwick
‘The work over these two days was inspiring. I’ve done many courses over the years exploring physical theatre and clowning. This course gave me new skills, new tools to unlock emotions through my body. I leave with exercises I can practice and play with daily, helping me get a truthful performance expressed physically.’ - Juliet Dante
‘This course will introduce you to parts of your body and mind you didn’t know existed. Highly recommended.’ - Francis G, Comedian
‘This course showed me some of the hidden layers to mime, whilst also helping me feel more confident with my body, gestures and text. Such a useful weekend with endless tools to take forward - and such a wonderful group of people to share it with.’ – Emilie Barton
‘There is a mixture of corporeal mime techniques and techniques for creating mime illusions. Each topic is more than enough for its own course. The course opened my eyes to the possibilities of expression through precise movement.’ - David, University Lecturer
‘The course helped me appreciate everyday actions that I have taken for granted.’ – Catherine Katsigianni, Dance Artist
‘I’m still digesting all the wonderful gifts this course brought. I feel much more in my body and aware and intentioned in my movements. It was wonderful seeing how isolating a simple movement or body part could convey so much.’ -
Gerry, Performer, Improviser, lover of all things theatrical
‘A really fun introduction to mime, very playful. A wide range of different ways to think about using your body - really varied and - a lovely group of people. I will certainly be using many of these skills in my future performing and will be back for more courses! It will really help me develop my one hour character comedy show.’ – Darren, Comedian and Improviser
‘I am still processing what I learnt over the last two days, but I have no doubt that the work helped me to unlock something within me as a performer. I am excited by the concrete changes I experienced and the practical tools I have gained in just two days, which will help me to further develop my work as a performer. I have attended many professional workshops over the years, including several other wonderful courses taught by Peta Lily, but this time, I experienced clear lightbulb moments, as the precision and repetition of physical exercises brought clarity and opened up new possibilities of truly embodied emotional expression.
I found the work revelatory and freeing, not just within me, but also through watching the work of the other participants. The best direct benefit of the course: I realised I had the physical ability to get out of my head and be fully present in my body without my mind getting in the way. Peta skilfully brings the group together and manages to cover so many things while making sure the work is joyful and accessible, never overwhelming. I leave with practical tools I know will help me on a daily basis in life and in my creative practice as a performer.’
‘Shakespeare’s quote about “seeing feelingly” feels particularly apt in this context. Emotional choices made through vibration (as opposed to intellectually) are powerful. The physical actions you choose inform the emotional journey of your character and help you give a truthful performance.’
‘How to get out of your head and experience physically what your body can express.’
